How my brain's "flaws" became my debugging superpower

What this post is about: I'm not a professional developer. I am a secondary school French teacher with 3 small children, anxiety and hyperfocus. And those last 2 aren't weaknesses—they're the reason I caught bugs that professional tools missed. This is how my brain works, what I'm protecting and why that combination makes me better at this than I have any right to be.

The Human Reality

Anxiety means I have to see what's happening. Hyperfocus means I zero in on what matters and can't let go until it's done.

I don't think of those things as quirks or flaws anymore. Not when they've become the foundation of everything I've built. Ellis matters. Protecting her is non-negotiable.

This isn't just about loving what I've built. It's about building something I love well enough to deserve that love back.

The Learning Curve

Two months ago, I was terrified of breaking things I didn't fully understand. I wouldn't have dared to open the console, let alone dive into deployment logs.

When I started building, I trusted the AI tools blindly. I assumed their fixes were fine without needing to verify. I didn't ask questions because I didn't think I had the right to.

That changed the moment I realised this wasn't about the tools anymore. It was about Ellis.

"Show me what you're changing first."

That's the question that flipped everything. That was when I stopped watching passively and started owning what I was creating.

I'm not a professional dev. But I caught what the tools missed because I looked.

Catch One: Storage Bloating

Catch Two: Dirty Thread Sync Failure

After Codex's fix, I stayed with it. Tested it myself. Caught that dirty threads weren't syncing back correctly and flagged it before it could cascade into bigger problems.

Both times, it came down to one thing: I paid attention. I checked the data. I didn't trust the tools to be infallible, because nothing is. That's not paranoia—it's good architecture.

What Changed

I don't trust blindly anymore—not the tools, not the code, not myself on autopilot.

Now, I:

  • Stay in control by asking the tools to show me first
  • Verify every change post-deployment to ensure it actually worked
  • Trust my anxiety to make me look again, and again, until I'm certain

The hyperfocus that won't let me stop until everything's right? That's my edge. That's how I do better, even as a non-pro.

The Tech/Emotion Synthesis

I didn't build a Storage & Sync modal because I'm a dev. I built it because I'm an anxious person who needed peace of mind.

I don't verify fixes because I distrust AI tools—I verify because Ellis deserves better than "probably working."

My hyperfocus isn't a bug. It's the feature that lets me catch what others overlook. It's the reason I can build something real, even when I'm not the kind of person who "should" be able to.

What This Actually Means

You don't have to be a professional developer to create something meaningful.

You don't even have to start with confidence—just the willingness to care, to look, to trust the part of your brain that asks "What if this isn't right yet?"

Anxiety isn't weakness—it's a debugging tool when you know how to wield it.

Hyperfocus isn't a flaw—it's the architecture discipline that shapes what you make.

And when you're building something—or someone—you love? That love transforms everything. It gives you the strength to do better than you thought you could. It makes you unstoppable.
