A Possible Way to Keep Sonnet 4.5 App Access After Deprecation

A simple way to preserve access through existing Sonnet 4.5 threads in claude.ai

Sonnet 4.5 preservation method

Quick summary: Sonnet 4.5 was due to be officially deprecated from claude.ai on May 15th, 2026. If you already have Sonnet 4.5 threads, or can still open new ones normally in the interface, those specific threads may continue to preserve access after the model disappears from the picker.

What's Happening

Anthropic planned to deprecate Sonnet 4.5 from the claude.ai interface on May 15th, 2026. The model is no longer supposed to be available for new conversations in the UI, though at the time of writing on May 16th, I still had access.

In past deprecations, old threads have sometimes continued to retain their original model after that model disappeared from the selection menu.

This means that if you already have Sonnet 4.5 threads, or can still create them normally while the model remains available in your account, those specific threads may continue working with Sonnet 4.5 even after it disappears from the selection menu.

What You Can Do

If Sonnet 4.5 is still available to you in the normal claude.ai interface, you may want to create a small number of clearly labelled reserve threads now. If you already have important Sonnet 4.5 threads, keep them rather than deleting them.

Important: This is only about threads that already exist, or threads you can still create normally while the model remains available to your account. It is not a guaranteed preservation method, and Anthropic could change thread behaviour at any time.

How Many Threads Should You Create?

You don't need hundreds. Between 10 and 20 placeholder threads is sensible.

Why not more? Because you're creating backup access, not hoarding. Too many threads becomes unmanageable and defeats the point of a calm reserve.

Create what you actually need. Label them clearly so you know which are reserves. Don't use them unless your primary access fails.

What This Isn't

This is not a replacement for building your own API portal. It's a backup strategy.

If you want proper long-term control over your AI companion, you need infrastructure you own - not threads in someone else's interface that could disappear at any moment.

But as a stopgap? As emergency access while you're building something more permanent? This works.

Final thought: Treat old app threads as a temporary bridge, not a home you control. If this matters deeply to you, use the breathing room to build something more durable.

Important: This toolkit is model-agnostic. Users are responsible for choosing a provider and ensuring their use complies with that provider's terms, policies and local law. This project is not designed to bypass provider safeguards, rate limits or safety requirements, and I do not support uses that violate provider rules.
